A Visit To The Biltmore Estate
Hi guys, in one of my first blog posts I talk about a trip Sean and I took to Asheville, North Carolina in September 2021. That post consists of our hiking adventures and culinary experiences around the city. But, while we were in Asheville we also visited the Biltmore Estate. Here’s a little history review so you have some context.
In the late 1880s, George W. Vanderbilt came upon the perfect spot in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains for a 250-room French Renaissance chateau to be built by his friend, architect Richard Morris Hunt. The great château would be called "Biltmore."
It is quite an incredible sight to see. Just driving in was mesmerizing. Its about a 10 minute drive into the estate, in which you are surrounded by lush forest. We went in the morning and started our day with two, hot lattes. It was September, so it was cool and misty in the morning. It was all very dreamy. Latte in one hand and my loves in the other, we walked into the magical Biltmore Gardens. I absolutely love finding botanical gardens when we travel and this one, was one my favorites.
With 8,000 acres of exquisitely manicured gardens you’ll feel like you are in another world. There are three gardens to enjoy (Rose, Azalea and Italian). The Rose Garden consists of more than 250 varieties. There are a couple conservatory’s for orchids, and other tropical plants, cactus and succulents. There are various hikes to choose from too. Depending on the time of year you visit you will see a range of seasonal blooms. I would like to go in April/May on our next visit. Here is a glimpse of the beautiful gardens.
That is just a peek into my Biltmore Gardens album. I took hundreds of pictures! Suffice to say, I was enchanted. This was my first time visiting the Biltmore, so I can only speak to the weather conditions during my stay. Mornings were in the low 60’s and warmed up to mid to high 70’s in the afternoon. The mornings were misty, overcast and cool. I would suggest doing the gardens first if you want to experience cooler weather, then going through the Biltmore house when it is a bit warmer out.
The Biltmore house is literally like a castle. Each room is extravagant, lavish and sophisticated. We chose the audio guide in which you learn about the Vanderbilts, their guests, architecture, design and art work. Their are other tours to choose from too, if you prefer something else.
In addition to the Gardens and the House, The Biltmore also offers dining, a winery, shopping, and, an overnight inn. There are also special seasonal events. Check out their website for all the details. We stuck to the house tour, walking around the grounds and the gardens during this visit. Now that we live in North Carolina, we look forward to making The Biltmore an annual visit. I have seen pictures during Christmas and can I just say WOW!
I think this is a historic must see if you are traveling to North Carolina. It is perfect for adults and kids. Comment below or message me if you have any questions about our visit to Asheville. Till next Friday.
